“Face” by Benjamin Zephaniah

Review: love it, love it, love it, absolutely love it!

I’ll just write a short summary of the book because if I’ll write everything I want, I’ll just write a whole book all over.So I’ll write only the basic story, so that you read it yourself.

The set in England. The main character is a 15 year old boy, called Martin. He has two friends, are Mark (the one that follows Martin and does everything that Martin does) and Matthew (the quiet one and the one who would think about risk of doing something). Martin also has a girlfriend, called Natalie (has independent personality).

The story is concentrated on Martin. One night he and his friends and girlfriend went to a club and had fun after which Natalie went home and Martin with friends went home by dark alleys where they meet a person who went to their school and he with his friend in a cool car. They invite the boys to have a ride with them, in the end Martin gives in thinking that they are just going to give them a ride home, Matthew decided to walk. Even though the older boys are under influence and they were not going to give Martin and Mark a ride home. After racing away from police they had a car crash. One of older boy died, other boy had bruises, Mark had few broken ribs and a broken arm. Martin lost consciousness in the crash and then car blew up.

Martin woke up in a hospital. He then found out that he has no broken bones and a few not too bad cuts. Then he understood that something happened to his face. He had serious burns on his face. Afterwards he needed facial reconstruction.

The book tells about how Martin coped with school and friends. Also about his feelings and how he didn’t like how people pitied him or how mean they were to him. This book tells about how he lived through toughest times of his life, how he found who his real friend are and things that really matter to him. This a great book about milestones, friendship, and betrayal. “Face” gives a new meaning to a phrase “don’t judge a book by it’s cover” even though everyone does. I liked this book because it goes through an enormous amount of emotions, any teenager can relate to this book in some sort of way. Also it gives a different perspective to what everyone used to. This book will dramatically change anyone’s view on life and will make anyone look around them and ask themselves “is this me? are they my real friends? are they going to stay with me no matter what?”.

This novel will make you sad, happy, excited, angry, it will make you cry and laugh. I would give more than five stars for “Face” by Benjamin Zephaniah. Definitely a book to read.

We take so many things for granted…

“We take so many things for granted in our lives. Every day, we wish for new things, a new laptop, a new ipad, a new promotion at job, blah blah blah, to bring a bit of luxury and of course fun to life. How often do we sleep while planning for tomorrow, although we have no idea if we are gonna ever wake up again? Of course, being ambitious and hopeful is good. But hey, just a minute, now lets think this way. What if we woke up, didn’t die or anything, but woke up and realized that we don’t have much time left?

The other day, as I was scrolling down on my Facebook news feed, something really caught my attention. A video. From a famous Persian actor’s fan page account. Since I like this actor, I opened up the video. It started up with Golshifteh Farahani, another famous actress who had to go outside Iran for many political issues a few years ago, with a strong make up. Looking quite sick, the atmosphere looked like celebrities were well trying to promote something that had got to do with health.

It was about cancer. And that how many people are dealing with Blood Cancer. How many Iranians. And that the genes of Iranians were too different to the genes of the people who had put their bone marrow into a genes bank to help others. This means that, so many Iranians have died in the past years because there were not many people from the country, with similar genes to donor just some of their bone marrow, which obviously didn’t impact their health in anyway.

After I saw this video, I looked at life in a different way for maybe just a few minutes or so. I thought: “Whoa! Look! there people who need this! there are people who don’t know if they will live for another month, week, even day or not. May be none of us do. No body guarantees that I will live for the next 70 years and not die tomorrow or that the person with cancer would die next week. The difference is simply just the likeliness.”

That night, my mum was sitting on the computer and all of sudden she said: “Hey do you think we could go on this website Bahram Radan and Golshifteh Farahani were talking about in this recent you tube video and sign up for a bone marrow donor? Have you seen it by the way?”

I just smiled. We can make a difference. With little things. Celebrities are the best to start it up with a little clue. But we could too. Any each of us could light up the little flames a celebrity makes. And.. to be honest, one flame doesn’t make a difference, but a large bunch of burning wood does. Yea, it makes a difference. The difference can be positive or negative. It can either burn a whole village, or light it up. Let’s be the one who lights up, not the one who burns…”

P.s. You could watch the video here 🙂
